AMEN RA, NADJA, EUGENE S ROBINSON & ZENI GEVA CONFIRMED FOR NEUROSIS' BEYOND
THE PALE AT ROADBURN 2009
"For Neurosis, what is music but a survival mechanism, and a war for the
soul? Zeni Geva embody this spirit"
--Steve Von Till, Neurosis.
Neurosis and Roadburn are very pleased to report that Amen Ra, Nadja, Eugene
S Robinson & Zeni Geva have been confirmed as the last 4 bands for the
inaugural European version of Neurosis' acclaimed Beyond The Pale festival,
set to be held at Roadburn 2009 on Saturday, April 25, the 013 venue,
Tilburg, Holland.
Scott Kelly comments: "Beyond The Pale is our mosaic. To us art is
not supposed to be safe and prepackaged for easy consumption. If it does
what it's intended to do then you won't know what hit you and you'll wake up
the next morning with the taste of blood in your mouth and an old spirit
will lead you to your next destination. Amen Ra is a band that shows you
what dedication and heart will bring you if you have good friends. They are
putting out multitudes of music, writing, art and inspiration. Their
progression is moving at a pace that has distanced from others who only
pretend to understand what it takes to do this.
I fully expect their performance at Beyond The Pale to be in another
dimension and we are honored to have them bring it us. There is a price to
paid for this sonic gift and Amen Ra have demonstrated time and time again
that they are willing to pay with blood."
"Slow, heavy, epic, downtuned, fuzz guitar drone with melodic hooks swirling
around in a hazy cloud of sonic bliss. Nadja creates musical movements made
for those specific moments when life needs an epic glacial soundtrack", says
Steve Von Till. "Canada's duo Nadja is prolific to say the least. One look
at their expansive discography is dizzying for any artist who has been
around for over a decade, but Nadja have only been around since 2003. Nadja
is of the few bands playing Beyond the Pale that I have never seen live, I
cannot wait to witness this music loud as hell emanating out of a huge sound
system."
"Eugene S. Robinson is an enigmatic warrior poet who will teach you in
harshest of terms what you can never understand. There are no barriers to
what this performance may bring... all things are possible when Eugene is in
the room. He is a writer and performer of the highest order. In support of
his first novel "FIGHT: Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Ass-kicking
But Where Afraid You'd Get Your Ass-kicked For Asking" Eugene will share his
lifelong relationship to violence, be it physical or psychic, and bring it
front and center to the 013.
We have known as friends, worked with, and been fans of Eugenes' unique art
and vision for well over 20 years and have witnessed countless performances
of Eugenes' band Oxbow as well as many spoken word engagements and there is
only one thing that I can
say for sure... You will never forget this performance, and you damn well
may wish that you could. Having Eugene be a part of Beyond The Pale is the
single defining moment of what we want this day to be. We are now officially
at the threshold, there is no turning back, let it be as it will be" --
Scott Kelly.
"For Neurosis, what is music but a survival mechanism, and a war for the
soul? Zeni Geva embody this spirit. Our first show with Zeni Geva in 1991
at the Kennel Club in San Francisco was a truly transformative experience.
That night we got to witness not only the amazing dirty psych rock of
Houston's Pain Teens, but we were floored by the crushing combative power of
Zeni Geva from Japan. Their music was totally unique. It was oppressive
in its repetitive nature, with the aggressive aesthetic of the noise
movement, and still reminded me occasionally of more psych or progressive
influences. They carried themselves like warrior monks on stage doing battle
for the sake of the sound.
Over the last 18 years, I have witnessed their evolution from their first
primitive battle cries to further pushing the limits of independent heavy
music.Their albums "Desire for Agony", "Freedom Bondage", and "10,000 Light
Years" (which we had the good fortune to release on Neurot Recordings) are
among my favorite albums. Our concerts with Zeni Geva have always been some
of our most memorable. I look forward to greeting my friends from Zeni Geva
again in Holland and I know that I am not alone in anticipating that seeing
them play live will once again be a near religious experience" --Steve Von
Till

GRAILS, EARTH, GREY DATURAS & TRIBES OF NEUROT CONFIRMED FOR NEUROSIS' BEYOND THE PALE AT ROADBURN 2009
"Grails are one of my favorite bands of all time"--Steve Von Till, Neurosis.
Neurosis and Roadburn are very pleased to report that Grails, Earth, Grey Daturas & Tribes of Neurot have been confirmed for the inaugural European version of Neurosis' acclaimed Beyond The Pale festival, set to be held at Roadburn 2009 on Saturday, April 25, the 013 venue, Tilburg, Holland.
Steve Von Till comments: "Guitars more lyrical than most voices, drums more frantic than Keith Moon, instrumentals that take you to both distant yet incredibly internal spaces. In my opinion Grails are one of the most formidable bands of our day. A tight knit group of dynamic players who simultaneously push their sound through the known gateways into uncharted territory while somehow remaining as hauntingly familiar as your own name. Perhaps they are improving on what has been taught to them, yet again, they may be opening new sonic doors be it through lulling the listener into a numbingly beautiful space or luring one into the dark recesses of their fucked up head. Either way, they are completely blowing your mind. Grails are one of my favorite bands of all time."
"Let’s face facts, the worlds of heavy guitar and drone music did not have much in common until Dylan Carlson and Earth seemed to come out of nowhere. Any project with the balls to name itself after the original name for Black Sabbath should have something intense to offer. What Earth brought forth was a minimal wall of distorted guitar bliss. A dreamtime music for the indie music world. Repetition so deep that the listeners ears and mind are altered to hear voices and subtleties that may or may not be there.
Slowly shifting yet endlessly sustaining, that chord would resonate through music and drone would eventually become part of modern heavy music vocabulary. As soon as they changed everything they disappeared in smoke only to reemerge years later. Bearing telecasters and evoking the literary dust covered blood stains of Cormac McCarthy with a narcotic pace, they are still changing the way we all perceive rock music."
"Not many display the DIY, "grab the bull by the horns" attitude the way Australia’s Grey Daturas do. Completely uncompromising music and total dedication to touring initially warmed our hearts to these amazing people. Not content to sit around and wait for something to happen, or for all the imaginary conditions to be right, Grey Daturas have toured the United States several times, mostly in the true underground art and noise spaces.
Expense, frustration and difficulties be damned, they show more balls than most bands that live in the U.S. or Europe.
Not many would reciprocate, and dare to throw it all to the wind and go to Grey Datura's part of the world. Uniting krautrock like jams, unstructured free noise, and psychedelic heavy rock into something unusual and heartfelt it will be a true joy to have their pure attitude and sound at Beyond the Pale."
Tribes of Neurot, the experimental soundscape sibling outfit to Neurosis will make a rare appearance at Beyond The Pale. Walter H, Roadburn's organizer comments: "Tribes of Neurot offer up a languidly swirling miasma of ambient psychedelica. Slowly cascading drones morph into startling glimpses of our own psyche's reflection and eventually fade back into hallucinogenic drones again. It is in these moments of unexpected self reflection that Tribes of Neurot prove that they offer up something unique in the field of ambient music.
They take their years of experience and put them to excellent use by adding layers of complexity and depth to their songs. The curious and the converted will be well rewarded for their attention, as sounds both soothing and foreboding will gently pull them into a blissful focused drift. See you down front when Tribes of Neurot round up three days of sonic exploration at Roadburn Festival 2009."

Neurosis & Roadburn are proud to announce
OM, Six Organs of Admittance,
Skullflower & A Storm of Light
for Beyond the Pale at Roadburn 2009.
"Om is the heaviest band to ever walk the face of the earth"
-- Scott Kelly, Neurosis.
OM, Six Organs of Admittance, Skullflower and A Storm of Light, along with Neurosis have been confirmed for the inaugural European version of Neurosis’ acclaimed Beyond The Pale festival, set to be held at Roadburn 2009 on Saturday, April 25, the 013 venue, Tilburg, Holland.
"Om is such a rare bird in the vast landscape that is sound, music, art, and emotive expression that they absolutely defy description", says Scott Kelly, "The straightest line is the quickest path to the godhead, Om know this, it is the foundation of their mountain. The meditative nature of the patterns and rhythms found within the speaker flexing sonic blanket that they weave is unparalleled. Om is the heaviest band to ever walk the face of the earth."
"Josh Graham is a prolific individual, a man driven to create. In the years that we have spent together collaborating in Neurosis he has shown himself to be a visionary artist as well as a diligent worker. A Storm Of Light is born of this obsession; it is an ominous sound, a cloud of oppressive doomage. Equal parts heavy and hypnotic, A Storm Of Light is a band grown from truth."
Steve Von Till comments: "All must bow before the pagan wall of drone --I couldn't agree more with the opening quote of Skullflower's semi-official website. Hearing the tortured distorted and eerily shamanic drones emanate from the stereo for the first time in the early nineties was truly a revelation. "IIIrd Gatekeeper" and "Obsidian Shaking Codex" are two of my all time favorite albums and have been extremely influential on the way my brothers and I approach guitar-based heavy music: to grab an electric guitar, drive a loud amplifier to its physical limit, and ride the drone into oblivion is ecstasy, and Matthew Bower has been showing us all how it is done for 20-odd years. Finally after all these years we will all get to witness the power together at Beyond The Pale 2009."
"The words "psych folk', although being a genre of music I feel a passion and affinity for, have begun to lose their meaning and significance over the last several years. A so-called "revival" has dredged up wave upon wave of shallow rehash. Ben Chasny and his Six Organs of Admittance, often tagged by that limiting genre, is a bright flower of inspiration to bring us all hope and remind us that as movements devolve, free spirits can rise above and remain vital among the pale imitators. Fearless and able to avoid the pitfalls and traps of classification he has constantly managed to play cathartic soul music. Not "soul" music, but music that accompanies transformation and the journey of one’s spirit. We are pleased to have this tonal psychonaut join us for this special event."
Also scheduled to appear at Beyond The Pale / Roadurn 2009 are The Young Gods, Akimbo, Guapo and U.S. Christmas, with more bands to be announced.
